Our Music Video

Print Screens

The above print screen shows the mtv logo, title of our song, the artist and the album from which the song is from. We added these features to the video because this allowed our piece to seem more like a real music video that would be played on a real music channel.
This screen print shows how we used the black and white tool to edit particular clips. We decided to turn the narrative part of the music video into black and white in order to convey emotion clearly. There is a serious yet depressive message/feel to the song we have chosen and we believe that by using this technique it is portrayed well.

The above screen shot shows how we altered the brightness of one of the clips in order for the video to flow. The clip directly before the one we brightened was obviously filmed at a different time of day & therefore the one after it was darker. After altering the brightness of this clip, we were able to give the illusion that the two clips were filmed at the same time of day.

Above is the screen print of adding in extra sound effects in order to enhance the piece. For example, we filmed one of the characters slamming a door & we decided to incorporate the noise of the door closing within the song to create an extra dimension.

Above is the print screen to show a video transition that we have used. We decided to use the 'cross dissolve' transition in order for the adjacent clips to flow swiftly into each other without it appearing unprofessional and untidy.

Video Editing

This is the screen print of the cuts we have done. When filming Katie miming the song, we did a few takes in order to ensure we had good quality film. Therefore, we have used parts from different takes and put them together to create one. This print screen shows how we have done that.

Above are the controls that we used to edit the ending of the video. So far, we have only filmed Katie miming the whole of the song so it is easier for us to cut to and from Katie and the other scenes when editing the whole music video. The above screen print shows how we have altered the end of the film by putting it in slow motion. Katie walks away from the camera at the end and we have used the slow motion tool to enhance the piece.

Magazine Advertisement

This is the poster in a magazine to promote Rihanna's new album. We enhanced the photograph by giving Katie lipgloss and exaggerating some of her make up. We used the spot healing tool to rid any blemishes and airbrushed the picture to give a flawless finish. After having looked at professional advertisements, we took the ideas and incorporated them into our own work. For example, we included an image of the album cover and the track list for the album.

These are the controls for the magazine advertisement promoting the album. As you can see, we have used many basic editing tools to enhance the piece, for example, the vibrance has been altered, along with colour balance, saturation, brightness and contrast.

Back Cover Album Package

This is a print screen of the final draft of the back cover of the album. As you can see, the font is consistent throughout along with the colour scheme and style of the album. After having looked at real album covers, we have added the finer details, for example: bar codes, producer names and record label logos.

These are the layers for the back cover of the album. As you can see, brightness and contrast plays a big part in the editing process of this section. We have layered the project by adding texts and shapes in order to enhance the piece. The shapes on the edge of the piece represent the 'tabs' that are on the side of an album case.

Inside Album Package

This is the inside of the album package booklet. Again, we thought that the package would be more effective if we kept the layout and style simple. We have used the same font as on the front of the album and the coloure schemes are constant.

Above is the controls panel for inside of the booklet. Here you can see that we have used many different text boxes and have arranged them in a way that looks more interesting that a straightforward left aligned document. Again, however, the majorit of editing tools we have used are adjusting the brightness, contrast and exposure of the photographs.

Album Package

Above, is the finished product of the album cover & the back of the inside booklet. After having researched into the albums Rihanna has previously released, we thought it best to keep the layout simplistic in order to match her style. Additionally, we thought that close up photographs would use up more white space whilst also emphasising the 'edgy' vibe we tried to give.

Above is a print screen of the layers on photoshop. From this print screen you can see the effects we have added onto the photograph in order for it to be enhanced. As you can see, the main editing tools we have used is adjusting brightness, contrast and exposure, however, we have also used the spot healing tool to hide any blemishes.

Our Own Work

After having researched into Rihanna's fashion style and genre of music, we realised that within our media shoot, we had to convey the correct mise-en-scene through the clothes that Katie wore. We also realised that we had to appeal to the target audience of the music video, ie: 15+. Therefore we needed to show Katie as being edgy but still sexy. These are a few of the photographs that we came up with:

Evidence of Song Cut

This print screen shows evidence of us cutting the song to an appropriate length.

Team at Work

As the original song, Love The Way You Lie Part 2 is too long for the task, we had to cut it down to an appropriate length, therefore, here, we were trying to decide which parts should be cut out of the song. Additionally, we began to look at an orignal Rihanna ablum, looking at the cover, back cover and inside package in order to gain ideas for our own print work.

Introduction to Coursework

At the beginning of the coursework stage, we decided to create a music video alongside a printed album cover and a magazine advertisement to promote the song. After having researched into different music genres, we narrowed our choices down to mainstream pop and R&B. After further discussion, we realised that mainstream pop could prove to be difficult and therefore we chose the song Love The Way You Lie Part 2 by Rihanna & Eminem - R&B. This was because we believed the song to contain a narrative that would be easier for us to work with.
