Evaluation Question 4

What did you learn from your audience feedback?

The video above shows how well the video was recieved. people commented on how each aspect worked well. We were very pleased with the outcome. One suggestion was to edit to colouring of some of the clips on photoshop. As we had anticipated, the fact we had to change the lighting between film and photoshoots meant it varied a little. I fixed this in premiere but increasing the saturation to match the other clips. Afterwards, everyone agreed that the editing looked more professional and seemless.

The video was very popular with a comment saying 'it looks like Glee but for pre-teens'. This was the aim of our piece, to reach out to younger audience with a similar message that it's okay to be different. Everyone agreed the piece really worked.
Lucinda.

I uploaded a JPG of the DVD cover onto facebook and these are the comments I got for it. Some people mentioned how the special features box was a little hard to read however on the print out the box is much clearer and I do not feel it is a problem.
Verity.

From the feedback I have recieved on facebook It seems my magazine has been very well recieved by a number of people who would fit my target audiences age.

The final DVD cover

The final DVD cover

Making the DVD cover

Next I added words to look like doodling as would appear on a real noepad at school. This was to give the cover realism.

Making the DVD cover

The next thing I did was to add all of the technical part of the cover. I added who it was written by and all of the logos of who was, hyperthetically involved in production as well as a barcode and BBFC certificate. These are all thing that need to added to a DVD to allow it to be sold legally and whilst it doesn't look nice on the cover it has to be there. I used arial for the font as it needs to be clear and some of the fancier fonts don't look as good small.

Making the DVD cover

Next I added the special features box. I used this using the shape tool with a stroke in a contrasting colour keeping in with the colour scheme of the DVD cover. I used "Throw my hands up in the air". This again kept the theme of school and the look of handwriting. The idea of putting bonus features on the cover was taken from many other DVD's as it is advertising for the DVD as you get more for your money.

Making the DVD cover

The next step I took was to add picture of three of the characters who we decided would be the main characters. There is the main character, her love interest and her rival. The main character and her love interest both have strokes in the main colourscheme of the DVD cover whilst the rival has a black stroke to show how she is the enemy.

Making the DVD cover

I added a quote from a Tv magazine as this a selling technique often used on DVD's. I also added a blurb onto the back. These were both done in the font, "Throw my hands up in the air". I used this font as it looks like handwriting on the lined paper.

Making the DVD cover

Using the font, "Throw my hands up in the air" I created a heart and make it cover the whole page. I used this font as it looks like handwriting and looks like doodling on the page. I reduced the opacity to stop it being too bright and eyecatching.

This is the picture placed in the background.

Making the DVD cover

I decided to use a picture of lined paper for the background on the back of the DVD cover as it would make the school theme stand out striaght away. I adjusted the brightness and contrast levels on photoshop to make the picture bright white and therefore stand out.

Music and sound effects...

After analysing different title sequences, I had decided to use a song rather than dialogue for my piece. I wanted a song that reflected the upbeat attitude of the show and the theme whilst also referring to the main character.
We came up with a list of songs to choose from:
Ultraviolet by the Stiff Dylans
She's so lovely by Scouting for Girls
For the Girl by the Fratellies
Schools Out by ACDC

We thought For the Girl was the best option as it's a very upbeat, fast paced song with quirky lyrics like, "She was into the Stones when I was into the Roses" This is clever and plays on the band name 'The Stone Roses' and 'The Rolling Stones'. This lyric suggests how the girl in the song is different and challenges conventions and society. This fitted well when related to the main character. The band is also a well known band and are more likely to be recognised by the target audience than a band like ACDC.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvDPYOe-7nI&feature=related - schools out
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uq-qasYIhWE - for the girl
The ACDC song is from the Rock genre, whereas the Fratellis- For the girl is more from the Pop/Rock genre which is more suitable for a younger audience and is more up to date than classic Rock. At the start of for the girl, the timing matches up the the animated title where there is a clapping like sound effect which works well the the type writer style animation.

We researched the record label for The Fratellis and found a contact email address for the company, Island Records. We asked them to email back if they wanted us to remove the track but we had no response, which is expected of such a huge company. Here is a copy of the email we sent them...

When editing the track I had difficulty finding a cut off point as the bands vocals often overlap from bridges, verses and chorus'. Instead I had to end the soundtrack at the start of a new verse. At first I tried just fading it out but I found it didn't really work. Most title sequences finish with a burst of sound like a bang or a sudden end to a track. I decided to try some school like sfx and found a school bell which worked to add finality to the track. It also reienforced the high school theme. I used key frames to begin fading out the track then layered the school bell sound over the top to end the piece which i also faded out using key frames.

Final Magazine:

Final Touch's:

The final things I have added to my magazine in an effort to make it look as professional as possible I have decided to look for a specific font that would enable me to include the name of the magazine in it.

The first font I looked at was called "EANBWRP366TTF":

What I liked about this bar code font was that it actually looked like a bar code. However there is a slight blur to this font that makes it look out of focus therefore I have decided against this font. Also I don't really like how the seven has just been randomly placed.

The next font I have looked at is called "Barmkod- Inverse":

One of the things I find particularly interesting about this font is how dramatic the overall effect is; visually. However the whole point of this font is to make it look like an actual barcode. Therefore I have decided against this font

The final font I have looked at is called "barcode":

I have finally decided to use this as my bar code font. What I really like about this particular font is how it is able to look like an actual barcode whilst also incorporating the series name into the code number.

The final change I have made is to use the text tool to add the words "The Magazine" to my cover as I wanted my audience to clearly distinguish the fact that my magazine belongs to the series and is not merely advertising the series. However I have discovered that in order for my text to show up I need to add a colourful stroke around it. To do this I will simply use the storke effect and just like with the feature picture I shall increase the size to 10.

Creating a Peeling Sticker:

Creating my peeling sticker was realtivly simple. The first thing I needed to do was draw my circle shape. To do this I picked the colour I wanted my shape to be inside- yellow. Then using my circle tool, I drew a large circle:

Next I used the stroke effect to add a blue reasonably thick outline to my shape. My settings were>size> 25 colour > blue> position> Outside.

The next step was adding the letter A for "GRADE A" to the sticker. To do this I first downloaded the font "anje Eilane" The I used my text tool to write A. I then changed the font colour to red:
Next I needed to use the polysagon lassa tool to cut out where I wanted my peel to go on my sitcker. To do this I simply used the polysago lasso tool to draw a triange, I then right clicked over the shape I had just cut out and clicked Layer Via cut which then seperated the cut I had just made from the overall sticker.

Next I will use my rotate tool to flip the piece horizontally so that it overlaps the sticker.

Now that I have successfully rotated the piece of my sticker, I am now going to use the fill tool, too turn the peeled piece of the sticker completely grey.

Next in order to make my shape look more like a sticker, I decided to use the effect overspray to add a better texture to the peel part of my sticker.

Finally I have decided to add a white stroke around the red letter "A" as I want the letter to really stand out. So to do this I will use the same method as I have used for making a blue outline for my sticker, only this time the effect will be placed on top of my font rather than my shape.

I have now finished creating my sticker and here is the finished product:

Teenage Fonts: Top Banner

So in order to find the perfect icon font, that would look dramatic enough and effective enough to catch my audiences eye, I have decided to look at three different types.

1.
Okay so unfortunatly the text is tiny, however you can see that is has cartoon words on it. What I really found interesting about the "onomatof" font is how dramatic it could look with the write use of fill colour. However since my banner is already small, I thought that perhaps actualy writing would mean the main information in the banner would be unreadable. So I decided against this one.

2.

What I really like about the " wc sold out" font is it's originality and stereotypical ideas of what teenagers are interested in. Again I thought that this font could be made really interesting by my use of font colour. However I have decided that because there isnt actually anything I could fill, the font may be lost against my banner.

3.
What I love about the "split splat splodge" font is the dramatic effect it has visually. Obviously most of these spotches of pain don't look particularly paint like. However letter "Q" which is the second one along. Would look extremely good if it was created in different colours. I think I am going to have a go at using the "Split Splat Splodge font. I think I am going to use possibly three or for splodges and I think I am going to use the colours red, pink and purple as they will complement my yellow banner nicely.

Here is what my banner now looks like:

However my research of other teenage fonts has been extremely beneficial as I have found a pair of glasses in the " WC Sold Out" Font that I will now add on to my banner so that the final banner now looks like this:

Improvements

Now that I have added my banner and all of the text I want for my magazine, I have decided to evaluate what I like and dislike about my magazine so far:

Positives:

1. I have to say as a whole image, my front cover is extremely striking. I think this is mainly because of the color scheme I have chosen to use. Not only do the colours all complement each other, but they also create a varity, which both my target audience of boys and girls will be drawn too. I hae purposely used these colours so that I could create a front cover that would appeal to both genders.

2. The next thing I think is partiularly effective is my banner at the bottom. I have to say that personally that for me is the most interesting part of my front cover, as it's interesting and and theres a lot to look at, yet it is not too cluttered.

3. I think my decision to cut out my models arm was a good decision as it has made her look more commercial and less staged.

4. I think my use of shapes to present importrant or desirable information is really effective as I think it really demonstrates that my target audience is between the ages of 12-16 and is not therefore for young men and women.

Negatives:

1. One of the biggest issues I am having with my front cover is the amount of empty white space. Therefore I have decided that I am going to create a peeling sticker. As it will take up space, however it will also add colour to empty white space and will therefore make my magazine visually pleasing.

2. The next thing I want to improve is the banner at the top of the page. I think the banner at the bottom of the page is fine being completely bare. But I do think as the banner at the top is one of the first things the naked eye jumps too it needs to look more dramatic. Therefore I have decided to look for fonts which have shapes that are decidedly aimed towards teenagers. For instance perhaps I could use graffiti, or doodling or possibly even paint splashes. I am also going to look for a font in which I can create a pair of glasses, so again my banner is more visually pleasing to my audience.

3. The final thing I need to do is obviously add in my Q photoshoot, teaser photo. However I think in an effort to take up space and make my front cover more dramatic visually I am going to have the image on a slight angle and I am going to use a stroke around the image so that again I am adding more colour to my cover.
