Evaluation question 3 (:

3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Here is an image of just some of the feedback we had recieved from friends and fellow students. Most people that had given feedback on our video had made comments on the originality or creativity of our video and had also mentioned that they liked the use of superheroes and villains as the 'good guy' and high school bully. Some people had also said that the whole style of the video fitted the music and the genre stereotypes of pop-punk. This is exactly what we were aiming for and so we are very pleased with the feedback that we were given. :)

As we have only recently released our video onto the internet, we have yet to recieve comments from many people other than other students and teachers. We have however got over 40 views since uploading it. :) All of the comments we have recieved have been positive and constructive and we are very pleased with the response that we were given, particularly from our target audience (teenagers, particularly those associated with the 'alternative' or 'punk' subculture).

Evaluation Question One :)

1.In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The song that we had chosen for our music video, The Anthem by Good Charlotte, is a very stereotypical Pop-Punk soundtrack. We watched the original video for the song along with various other music videos from this genre and found many similarities that appeal to this genre’s main audience. For our video, we decided to keep a lot of aspects similar to the genre conventions. For example, we chose people who had an alternative look about them for our cast. We also found that a lot of Punk-Pop videos were set in and around a high school or in ‘grubby’ looking suburban areas.

Here is a picture of some of our cast compared to other stereotypical Punk bands. As you can see, We tried to pick out the main physical features of a punk band (hair, clothes etc) and cast our video as appropriately as possible.

We decided that the music channel that would be most likely to show a video such as ours would be MTV. Stereotypically, MTV videos tend to have a lot of quick, snappy cuts and all of the shots have a lot of movement to them. We tried to imitate this in our music video, creating as many different shots as possible to give it variety and an energetic atmosphere. We also used a lot of handheld in shots in our video. These are also very common in stereotypical punk videos as it gives them a sort of home-made, personal feel.

For our print work, we looked at music magazines such as Kerrang! For inspiration. As our video revolved around a high school theme, we decided to interlink our printwork and make our digipak look like a cover for a school book. I also created a crumpled up file paper texture for the poster and used a scribbled effect on the type and images to make it look as though it was a piece of old paper that had been scribbled on. This is also typical of this genre as it represents teenage rebellion; on of the major themes of our piece and conventional of the ideaology of the 'Punk' subculture.

The picture above is our own piece of work in comparison to two other professional ones that we looked at. As you can see, there are aspects of these two posters (Scribbled/drawn band images, jagged type etc) that we have incorporated into our own work.

Band Filming :)

One of the most vital parts of a music video of this genre is shots of the band actually performing the song. Alex and I were very aware of its importance and the amount of time that it would take to set up equipment for this scene and so made this our first priority for filming. We used the media studio in our college and set it up to look like a small stage before adding the musical equipment (drums, guitars, microphones etc.) We enlisted the help of two of our friends to play the other two band members whilst Alex took lead vocals and I filmed them performing. Here are a few edited stills from the footage we had obtained. :)

Poster Development

Along with our digipak, we are creating an advertisement poster for the new album. As we had decided on the theme of an old school journal for our digipak, it seemed like a good idea to carry on this theme into our advertisement. We started off by creating a crumpled paper background:

Then we added doodles to make it look like a typical teenagers notebook. We set the layers to multiply and altered the transparency to make it look like they had been drawn onto the paper:

After this we added our band name, 'Killer Queen' and our album title 'Speak of the Devil' to the poster. We found that the black type didn't stand out very well against the background and so added comic book-like speech bubbles around them and outlined them in bright colours.

After this, we added an image of our digipak's front cover and the date that it was released, again putting the type on a more colourful background to make it stand out.

As everything else on our poster looked like it had been drawn on to a piece of paper except for the album cover, we thought that it felt slightly out of place. To fix this, we decided to make it look like it had been taped onto the paper.

Our Ideas for Print :)

To make our digipak more original, we decided to create our cover in the design of a school notebook. This is also relevant to our song as it is partially about life in high school. We went for the style of a typical teenagers journal, such as:

Digipak Research :)

Before deciding on a design for our digipak, we thought it would be a good idea to look at some professional examples for inspiration. Here are a few of the designs that we looked at:

Camera Shots

As we are going to be working with video cameras throughout the next couple of weeks, we felt it was important to explore all the different types of shots. Here is the diagram we used to help us:

What Makes A Good Music Video?

I have carried out some research and found some basic principles to make our music video look professional and interesting.

  • Good quality shots with high quality camera equipment.
  • A realistic cast that suit their individual roles.
  • Good editing that suits the overall style.
  • A wide variety of different shots and angles that display creativity and skill.
  • Music synced accurately to the video.
  • Smooth transitions between scenes - scenes of the video match up with the song i.e. a fast paced scene with a fast paced part of the music.

We will take these into consideration when we start filming and editing. :)

-Nikki :)

Our Ideas So Far...

This is the basic idea we have for our music video set out into a mindmap:
Our next step is to draw out some basic storyboards and work on finding people for our cast. :)

Research Into the Song :)

Good Charlotte – The Anthem (2002)

Capitol Records

Capitol Records is a major United States-based record label, currently operating in New York City as part of Capitol Music Group. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of EMI.

The song's music video premiered in January 2003 on MTV.

The Anthem became one of Good Charlotte's most popular songs, and has been featured on numerous film and videogame soundtracks. In 2003 alone, this song appeared in Madden '03, the movies American Wedding, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (although the film takes place in 1986), and commercials for the film Just Married. Since then it can be heard in The Pacifier and American Pie Presents Band Camp as well as on the soundtrack of Project Gotham Racing.

The music video was played countless times on the Kerrang! TV Music Channel.

Lyrics!

Good Charlotte - The Anthem

Good Charlotte - The Anthem Lyrics
(Yeah, here we go)
It's a new day, but it all feels old
It's a good life, that's what I'm told
But everything, it all just feels the same

At my high school, it felt more to me
Like a jail cell, a penitentiary
My time spent there, it only made me see

That I don't ever wanna be like you
I don't wanna do the things you do
I'm never gonna hear the words you say
and I don't ever wanna, I don't ever wanna be

You...don't wanna be just like you
Oh what I'm sayin' is this is the anthem, throw all your hands up,
you... don't wanna be you

Go to college, a university, get a real job,
That's what they said to me
But I could never live the way they want
I'm gonna get by, and just do my time, out of step while, they all
get in line
I'm just a minor threat so pay no mind

Do you really wanna be like them, do you really wanna be another
trend?
Do you wanna be part of that crowd?
'cause I don't ever wanna, I don't ever wanna be

You...don't wanna be just like you
Oh what I'm sayin' is this is the anthem throw all your hands up,
you, don't wanna be you

Shake it once, that's fine
Shake it twice, that's okay
Shake it three times, you're playing with yourself, again.

You...don't wanna be just like you
What I'm sayin' is this is the anthem throw all your hands up,
Y'all got to feel me, sing if you're with me, you, don't wanna
be just like you (just like you)
This is the anthem throw all your hands up, y'all got to feel
me, sing if you're with me
Another loser anthem (whoa-oh)
Another loser anthem (whoa-oh)
Another loser anthem (whoa-oh)
Another loser anthem

Our Project

Hello! We are Alex and Nikki. For our project, we have decided to create a music video, together with a magazine advertisement and CD cover for its release.

After careful consideration, we have decided to use the song 'The Anthem' by Good Charlotte and have begun discussing ideas for the video. :)

We'll be back soon! :D
