Evaluation - Question 4

Daniel Hilton

Evaluation Question 3

From our feedback we were told our final product was very good, when asked about what the audience thought was good about the video they said the video flowed really well ie they meant the editing between cuts and the continuity was very well done. We were also told that they enjoyed the storyline and the effects we had in the video such as the past, where we made it black and white, and the way the effects affected the overall piece by making them relate to the characters more. Also our use of camera work such as the shot in the mirror, was complimented saying that we had thought about the positioning of the camera and the way we worked the band shots into the video was also a positive note.

We didn't get much negative feedback. Although one person commented we should have an opening title to the song and band display during the intro and end to make it look more authentic and professional, and also put the logo of a music show in the top corner to further this effect. In the early stages we had the girl push the boy but we were told the shot looked too unrealistic so we went back and changed the clip.

Poster

From the feedback I was told the poster looked very basic and uninteresting so I needed to add more, I decided to add a picture of the band looking into the distance. But when I added the picture I found that some of the colours clashed and you couldn't really tell what some things said so I had to do some final tweaks to get it right.

The album cover was then put on to complete the grey box. We put reviews from top music magazines giving the album 5 stars to attract more interest and help sell the album. We also added the catchphrase "Turn it Up" which features in most HMV adverts.

We then made a black box which is what the album and information goes on. To make the vox lighter we used blending options to change the opoacity to 15%

The pricing and pink writing to help sell the album were put on the grey box.

The famous HMV dog was then added to the top of the page which is an instantly recognisable icon of the brand.

For our poster advertisement we used HMV as it is a massive company known worldwide, and the largest entertainment retailer in the world. It has 815 stores in 5 countries. In 2009 it had an income of £44.2 million.

To start the poster we added the HMV logo and slogan "get closer" And the three icons at the side which are different way top buy the product being advertised. This features on all HMV magazine adverts.

Album Cover

We drew various styles of monkeys we thought would be appropriate to represent the band.

We then choose which out of these monkeys we wanted to use and drew them as a band.

We imported the monkey drawing into photoshop using a scanner.

We then cropped out each monkey individually to separate them.

Using the magic eraser tool we deleted the white background.

The monkey’s leg disappeared when trying to delete one section of background so we used a pencil to fill in the gap and then the background could be deleted.

We used the paint fill tool to fill in the colour of the monkeys and then using the pencil tool in black we outlined the monkey and its features to make it stand out a little better.

We did this with each monkey ensuring that we used the same colour for each one and exported them as “.tif” files so that the backgrounds of each wouldn’t fill in white.

We then opened the template of the blank CD cover and transferred each monkey across by dragging them. After positioning them we chose the font “Kings Extortion” from the website “dafont.com” in order to create a fun text for the band name.

We also chose the font for the album to name to be “Chubby Cheeks” as this also was quite a fun font and it didn’t contrast too much with the band name.

We thought the background looked quite good white and therefore to make it look less plain we made the main background black and inserted a white rounded off square on to the front and back to create a border.

For the back of the album we made a black box again using the “Rounded off Rectangle Tool” in the shapes, onto which we put the song titles and track numbers again in the font “chubby cheeks” to follow on from the album name on the front.

To make the back interesting we then took the picture of the singer monkey and enlarged it so that half of its face covered the back cover. This enlarged monkey we then cropped so that it only covered the areas that we wanted it to.

We then duplicated the band name from the front cover and resized it to make it smaller for the back cover.

To make it more like a back cover we added the bar code and the credits

For the inside pages of the album cover we used different ranges of shots in order to create variation of each page and make it look interesting. We selected which photos that we had taken would be the most appropriate.

For example

We imported each image onto a separate CD cover template and made adjustments such as resizing and positioning the image to make it look effective. At this point we then made changes to the image colour by using photo filters, making the image black and white or adjusting settings such as vibrance and exposure.

We had to edit of of the pictures to take a person out of it as the picture was a good shot if the other person was taken out of it. Therefore using the clone stamp tool in Adobe Photoshop we copied the background of another part of the picture over then person to make it seem that she wasn't there.

After editing the pictures we then entered the lyrics and song names by adding a text box. The Song names we made slightly bigger than the lyrics at size 14 with the lyrics at size 9. This was to make them distinguished from one another. We used the same font for all the lyrics and song names throughout the album with "ThrowMyHandsUpInTheAir" from dafont.com.

In order for the text to stand out and be legible we had to add a stroke to it which we adjusted dependent on each back ground picture.
We also adjusted the transparency of the back ground pictures in order to make the text clearer.

We then placed the monkeys off the front cover at various appropriate intervals throughout the album in order to continue the monkey theme from the front page into the inside.

For the CD spine we used the same background as the front and back cover by having a white rounded box on a black background.

We then used the font from the front cover but on one line and rotated it to make the band name.

We cropped the heads off all three of the monkeys and added them to the CD spine in a vertical line.

We then put the album name next to the band name and again rotated it.

Research and Effects for Main Video

On slides 7 & 8, there are short clips of the way I used effects. It may have to be viewed in Powerpoint format in order to video them - but they're there. Honest.

Storyboards

In order to ensure we had the basic shot ideas and clip lengths, we drew out a storyboard that we could base our video on. Although we would try to stick to this when editing the final video, we used the storyboards as more of a guide than a final run of events.

Editing

The song ‘Mardy Bum’ is fast paced. This meant that we had to have a lot of cuts and the length of our clips had to be short. If we had a long clip in fast music, it would not fit the song properly and wouldn’t look right.

As we were creating a music video, and all of the sound would only be the song itself, we had to unlink the original sound from our clips.

Target Audience

We decided our target audience would be boys of the age 18. They would be middle class and would probably be attending college. Obviously they would be fans of indie rock and would hopefully be influenced by the music, the lyrics and their messages.

Choosing a Song

The song we chose was ‘Mardy Bum’ by the Arctic Monkeys.
The lyrics to this song are shown below.

Well now then Mardy Bum
I've seen your frown
And it's like looking down the barrel of a gun
And it goes off
And outcome all these words
Oh there's a very pleasant side to you
A side I much prefer
It's one that laughs and jokes around
Remember cuddles in the kitchen
Yeah, to get things off the ground
And it was all up, up and away
Oh, but it's right hard to remember, yeah
On a day like today when you're all argumentative
And you've got the face on

Well now then Mardy Bum
Oh I'm in trouble again, aren't I
I thought as much
Cause you turned over there
Pulling that silent disappointment face
The one that I can't bear

Why can't we just laugh and joke around
Remember cuddles in the kitchen
Yeah, to get things off the ground
And it was up, up and away
Oh, but it's rate hard to remember, yeah
On a day like today when you're all argumentative
And you've got the face on

And yeah I'm sorry I was late
but I missed the train
And then the traffic was a state
And I can't be arsed to carry on in this debate
That reoccurs, oh when you say I don't care
but of course I do, yet I clearly do, yeah!

So laugh and joke around
Remember cuddles in the kitchen
Yeah, to get things off the ground
And it was up, up and away
Oh, but it's rate hard to remember, yeah
On a day like today when you're all argumentative
And you've got the face on

We chose this song because the lyrics provided the basis for a good story line.

Dubstep:

Skream ft Example- Shot Yourself In The Foot Again http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDmWJbN8bDo

Dubstep is a relatively new genre of music and there aren’t many mainstream artists. This video is relatively similar in style to dance song, with the couple and the nightclub but it shows people drinking alcohol, smoking and drug abuse. Through our research we have found this type of video is not characteristic of the genre.
