Research of Trailers

We drew up a mind map of possible genres of film trailers to produce, and decided that a Rom-Com genre would work best in a college setting and with the resources that we had available.

From this initial idea, we set about researching film trailers on YouTube which fitted into our desired category. We looked “College Road Trip” a Walt Disney film about a controlling father and a daughter wanting to go to University miles away from her home.

We found that the trailer was easy to follow and worked well:

Benefits

  • Easy to follow plot.

  • Good use of comedy.

  • Effective use of split-screen editing.

  • Lighting and Sound works well.

Drawbacks

  • Slightly longer than our preferred 1min 30sec length, as it is 2mins 26sec.

  • Too many locations seems to give the plot away.

Another trailer that we research was Mean Girls distributed by Paramount, we took this as inspiration for our own movie trailer. Mean Girls is an ideal format to style upon as the setting and conventions are similar to which we have available to us.

Benefits

  • Location fits to the style of film.

  • Characters are conventional.

  • Features parallel sound throughout.

  • Film Strip montage works well.

Drawbacks

  • Slightly too long at 2mins 31sec.

  • Predictable storyline.

We also looked at "What Women Want" although this is a slightly older films than the previous, we looked at it due to the storyline.

Benefits

  • Excellent storyline of hearing people's thought, could work well within our constraints.

  • Conventional characters which can be developed.

Drawbacks

  • Lighting and sound of the trailer seems irregular.

  • Again too long at 2:29, our teaser trailer aims to be around the 1:30 mark.
