Planning: Documentary Mind-Map

To help organise our thoughts, we have constructed this mind-map to visually display our options and thoughts regarding producing a successful documentary. As you can see below, a lot of the ideas are inextricably linked and those with the strongest links are indicated.

There were six main branches that we considered and these all had their own unique sub-genres. Take a look:

Here are some things we discussed:
A documentary focusing on a medical journey is a tried-and-tested formula. It can start off with a retrospective look back at the past and then focus on the triumphant recovery. It would be an uplifting underdog story.

To create a more profound documentary, we could add elements of drama. An epidemic would be an effective way to create this and links with the contemporary fear of a global health pandemic. However, doing this may cross over into the mockumentary category if it's not realistic enough.

A convention utilised in some documentaries is the video diary format. It allows the audience to be drawn right into the narrative. A road trip would be an exciting and fast subject matter to document. It could have an anarchic soundtrack and a real coming-of-age vibe.
