Research/Planning: Channels and Audiences

BBC1: Staple in British television. Perhaps the most credible option. Renowned for excellent production values. Slight drawback in the general assumption that broadcasts must be formal.

ITV1: Generally, the people's favourite as it's variety of programmes make it the most accessible. Wouldn't be restricted by formality demands. More associated with reality TV and drama than documentaries howeve.

Channel 4: The channel people in the 16-35 demographic would probably watch the most. Good grounding in documentaries, especially with its 3-minute wonders. It's features modern topics and are delivered in edgy contemporary ways.

BBC Three: It's definitely the up-and-coming channel for young, interesting television. It's documentaries quite often have extra elements that appeal to a wide range of viewers. The only drawback to it being an underdog channel is that it doesn't have a big or wide audience.

More4: Easily, the most suitable channel for a documentary. It features many Cutting-Edge doccumentaries, as well as Oscar-winning obscure documentaries such as The Cove. It's highly respected but this may be a limitation in the number of young viewers who would watch.

YouTube: We could follow the independant route and just upload on to the internet. Many small companies do this and it works well. Documentaries (such as the ones below) can get hundreds or even thousands of views. The major drawback of the internet is getting the publicity when competing with a host of similar documentaries.
